Fabric Overload: Selecting the proper material is tough

You would think that picking fabric for something as simple as a makeup bag would be an easy task. Guess again.

I went to my first fabric show in Munich in September with Sophie. This is an enormous show filled with everything related to raw materials for the fashion world. There were buttons and zippers, ribbons and thread, and all types of fabric in any color, texture or design you could think of. If you couldn't find it there, someone could make it for you or even print your face on a piece of fabric if you wanted. Everything was all in one place, but with so many options how do you pick one?

I went to almost every single booth that looked like they could have the fabric that I was interested in. I asked everyone for fabric samples to be sent to me after the show. It was completely overwhelming to go to a show and look for something that you hope exists, but until you feel the fabric and see how it moves and how it looks after it is washed, you just don't know how it will work for the final product.

My favorite part of the show were the the buttons, snaps and zippers. We have decided to only use YKK due to their high quality, smooth feel and their ability to stand the test of time. We were able to test out everything that they had all in one place. I felt like a kid in a candy store! There were so many options of style, metal, plastic, color and beyond. Who would think? We don't even notice these items on our clothing and accessories, unless they are broken and suddenly I was picking them out right from the source.

Going to this show with an experienced Master Tailor was definitely a HUGE help.

If I went by myself, I would have been walking around aimlessly for days. She was able to prepare me in advance so we had a very specific plan of who we wanted to visit and what we wanted to get from them. It only took 3 days to get to everyone, but we did it and this was the start to the final Kusshi product.
